New UBB.classic(TM) 6.3 Installation - UNIX Server

NOTE ON RECOMMENDED WEB SERVERS:
UBB.classic(TM) has been tested under most common web servers for Unix. We highly advise using Apache, and web servers based on Apache. While it should be possible to install UBB.classic(TM) under other web servers (such as Netscape Enterprise / iPlanet), we have not been able to fully test UBB.classic(TM) installations and might not have enough experience to assist you if you choose to contact Infopop support!

NOTE ON THE DEFINITION OF "UNIX":
In all UBB.classic(TM) documentation, we refer to Unix and Unix-like operating systems under the general term "Unix". Commonly used Unix and Unix-like operating systems include: Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris (SunOS), OpenBSD, and Mac OS X. UBB.classic(TM) should install properly on other Unix-like operating systems as well.

NOTE ON UPLOADING FILES:
All files must be uploaded in ASCII mode (text mode in the Fetch FTP client), EXCEPT the files that end in .jpg or .gif that are in your non-CGI directory. If you are unzipping the file on the server, use the "-a" switch to the unzip command to ensure that the scripts are unzipped correctly.

1. Upload all files in the "cgi-bin" folder of the zip file into the directory you will be using for your UBB.classic(TM) CGI files. Permissions for all of these files and your CGI directory must be set to 755 (-rwxr-xr-x).

2. Upload the contents of the "variables" folder from your zip file into your UBB.classic(TM) CGI directory. Permissions for all of these files must be set to 777 (-rwxrwxrwx).

3. Create a "Members" directory on the server. Place the contents of the "Members" folder in the zip file into the directory on the server. Permissions for this directory and the file named "members_test.cgi" must be set to 777 (-rwxrwxrwx). If you can place this directory above the web root, do so. Otherwise, you should place the Members directory within the UBB.classic(TM) CGI directory.

Note: For added security, name your Members directory something other than "Members". We advise something similar to "Members" so that we can locate it in the event that you require Infopop support. Alternative Members directory names could include "M3mb3rs" or "srebmeM"

4. Create a directory named "ubb" on your server for your UBB.classic(TM) non-CGI files. Set permissions on this directory to 777(-rwxrwxrwx). Upload all files (including the subdirectories shown) in the "noncgi" folder into this directory. Special permissions on these files are not needed.

NOTE: Do not place the UBB.classic(TM) noncgi directory within the UBB.classic(TM) CGI directory.

5. Check Perl path for these three files: ultimatebb.cgi, cp.cgi, and ubb_upgrade.cgi. None of the other cgi files requires a Perl path. If you are unsure of your server's Perl path, consult your web host's support pages or ask their support department for assistance.

You can test your permissions now by uploading ubb6_test.cgi (located in the help directory of your zip file) in ASCII to your UBB.classic(TM) CGI directory and running the tests. There is more documentation on this file located in the help directory "ReadMe.txt" file.

6. You must now set up your board by typing http://www.yourdomainhere.com/url/to/cgi/cp.cgi in your browser. Replace "www.yourdomainhere.com" with your real domain name, and replace "/url/to/cgi" with the real URL to your UBB.classic(TM) CGI directory. Setup instructions will appear and a series of 7 fields of information to fill in and submit.

The UBB.classic(TM) software may have your paths and URLs already filled in. They are usually correct but please check them; this will save you some time.

7. After you have correctly submitted the basic configuration properly, you will be greeted with a screen that tells you so and asks you to log into your control panel to complete your setup. Click on the link that says "click here."

8. Before you can log into the control panel you must first create your administrator login. Look for the line above the login box that says "Please set up your admin profile by clicking here." Click on the "click here" link. Fill in all of the data fields and click submit. Close this window now. You should see the original control panel login window.

9. Enter the username and password for the administrator you just created and click the "Submit Identification Now" button. Welcome to your new control panel!

10. You must now review and configure all of the Primary Settings, under the Primary Settings drop-down menu. Read, review, and set all of the Primary Settings carefully and in order top to bottom. There are ELEVEN different options. If you do not see all of the options in the drop-down menu, use the scroll bar on the drop-down menu.

You will be prompted after each configuration screen if you forgot to finish a required item. Note: The Configurations Settings screen should already be accurate. Please check it just in case!

11. Your board is now set up and functional. You can continue to navigate around the control panel, make forum settings changes, customize your Wordlet(tm) lists, and review the rest of the UBB.classic(TM) features. You can visit the new location of your board by clicking the link in the upper left hand corner of the control panel, labeled with the name you have given your board in Primary >> Configuration Settings. (This text is immediately below the Infopop light bulb and logo)

12. The UBB.classic(TM) 6.3 software has two new URLs for the control panel and board. To access the board, use ultimatebb.cgi. To access your control panel, use cp.cgi.
