UBB.classic(tm) 6.3

After you have unzipped the file you should see 5 folders: "cgi-bin", "help", "Members", "noncgi" and "variables".

STEP 1

If you do NOT see these folders, set your unzipping software to 'preserve directories' and start over. Do NOT try to install the UBB.classic(tm) by guessing at the file names and locations. If you are on Unix, unzip using the "-a" option.

STEP 2

Print out the installation instructions included in the help folder. It might be useful to print this file as well.

Be sure to choose the instructions that match your server [Unix/Linux or Windows NT/Windows 2000].

If you require them, instructions for upgrading from the UBB(tm)5 series to UBB.classic(tm)6 are included in the help folder.

STEP 3

Follow each step in the instructions. Ask for help from a friend or your hosting provider if you are unsure about how to complete the instructions.

DIAGNOSTIC SCRIPTS

A) The 'hello' scripts called hello.cgi and hello.pl are in the help folder

If you have trouble getting the UBB.classic(tm) scripts to run, start with the hello scripts. Using your FTP client, upload the two files in ASCII mode to the CGI directory, with the other UBB.classic(tm) scripts. Set them to execute (Unix: chmod 755, or "-rwxr-xr-x") and call them from your browser: http://yourdomain/cgi-bin/hello.cgi AND http://yourdomain/cgi-bin/hello.pl

If the hello scripts do NOT work, it means your server is not yet set up to handle Perl scripts. UBB.classic(tm) will not install successfully until the hello scripts execute without error and give you a 'success' message.

Your web hosting provider can help you configure these simple test scripts if they do not run. You should check their online support information, email their support department, or call them on the phone..

B) The pathto.asp will run ONLY on a Windows NT/Windows 2000 Server. It will assist in determining your absolute paths. Using your FTP client, upload the file, in ASCII mode, to the CGI directory, with the other UBB.classic(tm) scripts. Call it from your browser: http://yourdomain/cgi-bin/pathto.asp

If the pathto.asp script does NOT work, your web server is not mapped correctly or is not a Windows server. Consult your web hosting provider.

C) The ubb6_test.cgi script will run on both Unix/Linux and Windows NT/Windows 2000 servers. Your hello scripts above must work first.

Upload ubb6_test.cgi, in ASCII mode, to the CGI directory with your other UBB.classic(tm) scripts. If required, set it to execute. Call it from your browser http://yourdomain/cgi-bin/ubb6_test.cgi

Follow the directions for checking your paths and permissions. Use the help links it provides. Be sure to remove this script after you have configured your UBB.classic(tm)!

CAUTIONS

Do not leave pathto.asp or ubb6_test.cgi on your server. Delete them from the server when you are done. Leaving them in place poses a security risk.
