Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device

Hello! When I try to play any sound through a program like xmms, I receive the following message:

** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device

I BELIEVE (but not sure) it is happening since I installed Dropline Gnome (I tried to install FreeRock Gnome first, but not even my firefox was working anymore because of problems in lib files, so I reinstalled my whole system and tried this one)

I tryed to use alsaconf and reconfigure my sound, but it didn't solve the problem.

I compiled my own kernel with not much knowleadge, but I could make audio working until yesterday. The main "system change" that I've made today was to install Dropline Gnome. I tried to run xmms as root, but didn't solve the problem.

Thanks to anyone who tries to help me.

Edit: Oh, btw, there IS a file in /dev/dsp linking to another file: /dev/sound/dsp. I tried to chmod 777 both of them and it also didn't work.

Does sound work as root? That error message really doesn't make sense if both /dev/dsp and /dev/sound/dsp both exist.

No, the sound doesn't work not even using xmms as root. See for yourselves:

bash-3.00$ su
Password:
bash-3.00# cd /dev
bash-3.00# ls -al dsp
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 2006-06-15 18:25 dsp -> sound/dsp
bash-3.00# cd /dev/sound
bash-3.00# ls -al dsp
crwxrwxrwx 1 matrix audio 14, 3 2006-06-13 17:24 dsp
bash-3.00# xmms

** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device

bash-3.00#

I think it is quite weird too.

Try logging in as root (hey, gotta try...)

Also, could you post
Code:
lsmod lspci
May give us a better grasp at what is going on.

Also, have you run 'alsaconf' as root (Not su as root)?

I see the 'oss' error in your post. oss has given way to alsa now....

And what kernel are you running?

I am using 2.6.16.20 kernel...I recompiled it and it seemed to work now. Quite strange, but let's say this thread is solved for now.

I thank tuxdev and cwwilson721 for the help.

You are very welcome.

It's happened to myself countless times: Compile or install the kernel, things foul up.
I know I did it right...
Reconfig, doublecheck my sound settings, Duh! Forgot to enable the chipset in alsa, and had it set for some reason in oss.....

It happens. That why this is called "Golf", not "Cooking"

oops, need to reboot my OS bef...
