When I start up vmware workstation 5.5.1 on SuSE 10.1, I get the message:
Failed to open sound device /dev/dsp: Permission denied.
The permissions are 666, root.audio /dev/dsp.

I'm experiencing a similar problem.
I'm using the Slackware 10.2 (kernel 2.6.16.22, sound driver: ALSA) as my host system and when I power on my virtual machine, it is shown the following error message:

"Failed to open sound device /dev/dsp: no such device.
Virtual device sound will start disconnected".

The sound is working properly on Linux, I don't know what is happening.

Does anyone know how to fix it?

Ditto error message on power on of Windows xp guest on Ubuntu 6.06. In the install everything went through smoothly. I don't know if there was an option for sound during the intall or config scripts. I looked up in /dev, the dsp device is listed. I can't see why WS is not seeing it.

You're probably using artsd as soundsystem. Maybe you should look following at following URL http://platan.vc.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware and download vmwaredsp 1.3 from there. Then Vmware should be able to use artsd.

I downloaded vmwaredsp-1.3.tar.gz, read the README, ran "runme.sh" and then ran vmwarearts.

I still get the error message about /dev/dsp:
Failed to open sound device /dev/dsp: No such device
Virtual device sound will start disconnected.

The permissions on /dev/dsp are 666.

I don't know which sound system you're using (artsd or the enlightment sound deamon) but did you try to start vmware with
vmwareesd instead of vmwareartsd?

Tkx Edi,
It is running now!
I've downloaded the vmwaredsp-1.3 package, installed it and started the Vmware workstation using the vmwareartsd. It worked!

Tkx again.

I don't know which one I'm running either. (How do I tell?)
I did try both invocations, and both complained about not finding /dev/dsp.

SuSE 10.1 uses ALSA and KDE the artsd daemon so normally starting vmwareartsd should be the correct solution.

I find it strange however that you have this error. I've installed SuSE 10.1 on my laptop and Workstation works smoothly also without the vmwaredsp package.

The rights for my /dev/dsp:
660 owner (el1971) group (audio)

I have vmwarearts, not vmwareartsd. When I run vmwarearts, I get the message:
Failed to open sound device /dev/dsp: No such device Virtual device sound will start disconnected.

I get the same message with vmwareesd.

Is your host configured your for sound and does it work correctly on the host?

Does /dev/dsp exist?

What are the permissions?

I found this thread and, EUREKA, my sound is now working with arts. Thanks!!!

One issue remaining.
When I started Workstation, it said it could not open /dev/mixer.
/dev/mixer does exist, with RW rights across the board.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.
